01Dining, Coffee & Weekends

Food, drink and going out

Chennai runs on daily rituals.

There's filter coffee at 7am, idli-sambar at Murugan or Sangeetha, and a walk on Marina or Besant Nagar Beach at sunset. December means Carnatic concerts, and a new Tamil film means the first show on the first day. The city doesn't put on a show for outsiders, but once you settle into its rhythms you find real depth and warmth.

Coffee Ritual
The Filter Coffee Religion
Davarah-and-tumbler service, decoction prepared overnight, mixed with hot milk. Sangeetha, Murugan Idli, Adyar Ananda Bhavan (A2B) all maintain the ritual. Learning to pour from tumbler to davarah and back to cool the coffee is part of the experience.
Temple Culture
Mylapore & Triplicane
Kapaleeshwarar Temple (Mylapore) and Parthasarathy Temple (Triplicane) are 7th-8th-century active temples. Marundeeswarar (Thiruvanmiyur) is another active heritage site. Modest dress is expected.
Cinema Devotion
Kollywood First-Day-First-Show
Tamil cinema is huge here. Rohini Silver Screens, Sathyam Cinemas, Luxe at Phoenix MarketCity, first-day-first-show of Vijay, Rajini, or Ajith films is a cultural phenomenon worth experiencing at least once.
Beach Mornings
Marina & Besant Nagar at Dawn
Chennai mornings start with the sea. Marina at sunrise (5:45-6:30am) is a public ritual, joggers, yoga groups, the fishing community pulling in the night's catch. Besant Nagar's Elliot's Beach is calmer, café-friendly, and excellent for families.
Women's Safety
Getting Around Safely
  • Overall: Chennai is widely regarded as one of India's safer metros for women, with a strong everyday street culture, but the usual big-city caution applies, especially late at night.
  • At night: Stick to well-lit main roads and established areas (Nungambakkam, Adyar, Besant Nagar, OMR gated belts); avoid empty stretches and isolated beaches after dark.
  • Transport: Prefer app cabs (Ola/Uber) with live trip-sharing over flagging autos late at night. Save the Kavalan SOS app and the 1091 women's helpline.
  • Norms: Modest dress is appreciated in temples and traditional neighbourhoods (Mylapore, Triplicane, T. Nagar); premium areas are more relaxed.
LGBTQ+ Chennai
Legal Status & Community
  • Legal: Same-sex relationships were decriminalised in 2018 when the Supreme Court read down Section 377. Same-sex marriage is not yet legally recognised in India.
  • Climate: Chennai is comparatively progressive, it has hosted the Chennai Rainbow Pride march since 2009 and has a visible, active community, though public attitudes remain more reserved than in the West.
  • Community: Groups such as Nirangal and Orinam run support networks and events; cafés and venues around Nungambakkam, Alwarpet and the OMR belt are welcoming.
  • Discretion: Public displays of affection, for any couple, are uncommon in Chennai; read the setting.
Accessibility
Reduced-Mobility Notes
  • Footpaths: Pavements are uneven and often obstructed across much of the city, independent wheelchair travel on footpaths is difficult, so plan door-to-door transport.
  • Metro & airport: Chennai Metro stations are step-free with lifts, tactile paths and wheelchair access, and Chennai Airport offers assistance on request, the easiest ways to move.
  • Venues: Newer malls (Phoenix MarketCity, VR Chennai, Express Avenue), premium hospitals and international hotels are well-equipped with ramps and lifts; older temples and heritage sites far less so.
  • Housing: Ask IKAN to prioritise lift-served apartments and step-free gated communities when shortlisting homes.

02Tamil Language Guide

Tamil words that help

Tamil is one of the oldest languages still spoken in the world, with two thousand years of literature.

In Chennai it is the language of daily life and of fierce local pride, and almost everything outside premium offices happens in Tamil. English works in international companies and good hotels. A few sincere Tamil phrases will change how auto drivers, kirana (grocery) shop owners, building staff and neighbours treat you. Fewer people speak Hindi here than in any other big Indian city, so don't assume it. Start with Tamil or English.

வணக்கம்
Greeting
Vanakkam
Hello, goodbye, “I bow to you.” The universal Tamil greeting. Use with folded hands, it works in any setting and instantly warms every Tamil speaker.
நன்றி
Gratitude
Nandri
Thank you. Slightly formal, perfectly polite. “Romba nandri” (ரொம்ப நன்றி) means “many thanks.” A nod and a hand on the heart pair beautifully with it.
சார் / அம்மா
Respect
Saar / Amma
“Sir” / “Madam”, used after a greeting (“Vanakkam saar”) for elders, professionals, or anyone in service. “Anna” and “Akka” are warmer options for peers.
எப்படி இருக்கீங்க?
Daily
Eppadi irukeenga?
“How are you?” (polite/plural form). Response: “Naan nalla irukken” (I am well). Use with neighbours, regular auto drivers, your building's security guard.
சாப்பாடு
Food
Sapadu
Food / meal. “Sapadu aacha?” (சாப்பாடு ஆச்சா?) means “have you eaten?”, the ultimate Tamil hospitality question. Say “illai” and someone will immediately offer you something.
ஃபில்டர் காபி
Coffee
Filter Coffee
Ordering “oru filter coffee” anywhere in Chennai gets you the authentic davarah-and-tumbler experience. “Adipoli” means “excellent”, use it after the first sip for an instant smile.
எங்கே?
Navigation
Enge?
“Where?” The most useful single-word question for navigating Chennai's smaller streets. “Auto, T. Nagar enge?” Most autodrivers know landmarks by reference, not addresses.
கொஞ்சம்
Quantity
Konjam
“A little.” Useful for ordering food (“konjam spicy”), portion size, or asking for time. The Tamil version of “just a bit” or “a small amount.”
மெதுவா
Pace
Medhuva, Medhuva
“Slowly, slowly.” A perfect Chennai phrase, used by autodrivers, in the kitchen, and as life advice. The unhurried, relationship-first pace of the city is encoded in it.
தலைவர்
Cinema
Thalaivar
“Leader” or “Boss.” In Chennai this is also a reverential term for actor Rajinikanth, “Thalaivar films” is the genre of Rajini-anchored Tamil cinema. Used affectionately for many idols.
அண்ணா / அக்கா
Affection
Anna / Akka
“Elder brother” / “elder sister.” Universally warm address for waiters, drivers, shop assistants, and acquaintances slightly older than you. Far more endearing than “sir/madam.”
இது என்ன?
Curiosity
Idhu enna?
“What is this?” The essential question when faced with an unfamiliar snack, festival item, or street-food preparation. Tamil speakers love explaining their food, this opens conversations beautifully.
மன்னியுங்கள்
Apology
Manniyungal
“Pardon me / sorry.” More formal than English “sorry.” Use in temples, during introductions, or to apologise for cultural missteps. Pairs well with folded hands.
வலது / இடது
Direction
Vala / Idatu
“Right / Left.” Essential for autodriver navigation. “Vala turn” or “idatu side” gets you understood even if your accent is far from perfect. Most drivers guide you generously.
போயிட்டு வரேன்
Farewell
Poittu varein
“I'll go and come (back).” The traditional Tamil farewell, implying you're not really leaving, just stepping away. Far warmer than a Western goodbye. Response: “Vaanga” (come).
கண்டிப்பா
Assurance
Kandippa
“Sure / certainly / definitely.” The confident yes, use it to reassure someone or confirm a plan. A warm, emphatic way to say “absolutely, count on it.”
அப்படியா?
Reaction
Appidiya?
“Is that so? / really?” The everyday response that shows interest and mild surprise. Drop it into a chat with your auto driver or neighbour and the conversation instantly warms up.

03Weekend Escapes

Weekend trips

Chennai is very well placed for weekends away. Along the East Coast Road, UNESCO heritage is an hour away and French colonial Pondicherry is three. Bangalore is a 60-minute flight. Even Sri Lanka and the Maldives are short hops via direct flights from MAA.

Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram)
Chennai's favourite weekend escape, 60 km south along the East Coast Road. The 7th-8th century Pallava-dynasty rock-cut temples are UNESCO World Heritage. The Shore Temple, Pancha Rathas, Arjuna's Penance bas-relief, and Krishna's Butter Ball. Beach resorts (Radisson, InterContinental, Taj Fisherman's Cove) make excellent overnight bases. Sea-facing dinner at Wharf at the InterContinental is a Chennai classic.

Pondicherry (Puducherry)
India's "French Riviera", 160 km south on the ECR. The French Quarter (White Town) with its boulangeries, mustard-yellow heritage villas, Promenade Beach, and the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. Auroville, the international township, sits 10 km north. Excellent boutique hotels (Maison Perumal, La Villa, Le Dupleix). Easily a 2-3 night escape; many Chennai families maintain weekend homes in Pondy.

Kanchipuram · Temple Town & Silks
75 km west of Chennai, one of India's seven sacred Hindu cities and the historic capital of the Pallava dynasty. The Ekambareswarar, Kailasanathar, and Varadharaja Perumal temples are masterworks of South Indian temple architecture. Kanchipuram is also India's most famous silk-saree weaving town, visit the Pillaiyarpalayam handloom cooperatives for direct purchases.

Yelagiri Hills
230 km from Chennai, a compact hill station in the Vellore district. 1,100 m elevation, cool weather, paragliding, a small central lake, herbal gardens, and orchards. Less crowded than Yercaud or Ooty. Excellent for a weekend reset, particularly during Chennai's brutal April-May summer.

Bangalore
350 km west, a different climate (cooler, drier) and a distinctly different urban culture. Excellent for a city-change weekend, particularly during Chennai's summer humidity. Indiranagar, Koramangala, MG Road. The Bangalore-Mysore corridor adds Mysore Palace, Coorg, and BR Hills for longer breaks. The Vande Bharat train (4 hr 30 min) is increasingly the smart choice.

Sri Lanka & Maldives
Chennai's underrated weekend advantage: short direct flights to Colombo (1h 15m) and Malé (1h 45m). Long weekend escapes to Bentota, Galle, Kandy, or any Maldivian atoll are practical from MAA. Both countries grant Indian-residents-friendly tourist visas, your IKAN consultant can clarify your specific case.
